PILLER and the transition to a sustainable industry using high-temperature heat pump technology
The industrial world is under pressure to reduce emissions while remaining economically viable - especially in processes that generate or require large amounts of heat. High-temperature heat pumps are key to replacing fossil fuel steam sources in process engineering, chemical, food processing, and biofuels. This is where PILLER brings its core competence to bear: as a supplier of the critical component - the MVR compressor.
Our VapoLine product family (e.g., VapoFan, VapoFlex, VapoMaxX) is designed to compress low grade steam, raise the temperature level, and return it as usable process heat. Individually or in series configurations, we achieve heat lift values of over 20 K per stage. This allows industrially relevant temperatures (e.g., 150–210 °C) to be generated economically. Our compressors achieve efficiencies of up to 87% thanks to optimized impeller, housing, and bearing systems.
One impressive example is the Pannonia Bio project. There, an MVR system with PILLER compressors was used to optimally reuse the heat in the overhead vapor flows, significantly reducing the need for externally generated steam. The project was honored with the IChemE Global Energy Award 2021 and demonstrates how technically, and economically viable such solutions are. Pannonia Bio saved 32 MW of gas and reached a payback in less than 2 years.
Each PILLER compressor is designed on a project-specific basis: we tailor the machine size, choice of materials, performance characteristics, and integration into existing plants. The plants run reliably in 24/7 operation, even under fluctuating conditions. Our systems have proven themselves particularly in industries such as bioenergy, wastewater treatment, chemicals, and food processing.
In addition, our in-house process engineering expertise allows us to simulate and design customized heat pump solutions, ensuring optimal integration into existing process environments.
